Blackjack Rules: How the Game Works

Blackjack, also called Twenty-One, is the most played casino card game in the world, and the table above teaches it the way it should be taught: by dealing you in. Everything the dealer walks you through up there is written out below, so you can read first, play first, or jump between the two.

The objective is misunderstood more often than any other rule. You are not trying to hit exactly 21. You are trying to beat the dealer — either by holding a higher total without going over 21, or by staying in the hand while the dealer goes over (a "bust"). You play against the house only. The other players at the table are company, not competition.

Card values

How a round unfolds

  1. Bet. Every player places chips in their betting circle before any card moves.
  2. Deal. Each player receives two cards face up. The dealer takes one face up (the upcard) and one face down (the hole card).
  3. Decisions. Starting left of the dealer, each player plays their hand: hit, stand, double down, split, or surrender. The full toolbox is covered in the next section.
  4. Dealer's turn. The dealer reveals the hole card and plays by fixed house rules: hit on 16 or less, stand on 17 or more. No judgement, no choices.
  5. Payouts. Beat the dealer and a normal win pays 1:1. A blackjack — ace plus a ten-value card on the first two cards — pays 3:2. A tie is a "push" and your bet comes back.

Variations worth knowing

Not every table plays identically. The rule set taught here is the common six-deck game where the dealer stands on soft 17, but you will meet variants: European Blackjack deals the dealer's hole card only after players act, Vegas Strip allows resplitting to four hands, and Blackjack Switch lets you swap cards between two hands at the price of even-money blackjacks. Each tweak nudges the house edge. The biggest one to watch for is the payout line printed on the felt: a table paying 6:5 on blackjack instead of 3:2 costs you about 1.4% extra and is worth walking past.

Side bets like Perfect Pairs and 21+3 are offered nearly everywhere now. They pay big numbers on rare events, and they carry a house edge several times larger than the main game. Treat them as entertainment, not strategy.

Where the game comes from

The direct ancestor is vingt-et-un, played in French casinos in the 1700s. The American name arrived later: gambling houses promoted the game with a 10-to-1 bonus for a hand of the ace of spades plus a black jack, and the bonus died while the name stuck. The strategic era began in 1956, when Roger Baldwin and three fellow statisticians published "The Optimum Strategy in Blackjack" — the paper that became the basic strategy chart you'll meet two sections down.

Hit, Stand, Double, Split: Your Five Decisions

Every blackjack hand comes down to choosing one of five moves. Two of them you'll use constantly, three of them exist for specific situations where they quietly earn (or save) you money.

Hit

Take another card. You can keep hitting as long as you stay at 21 or under; go over and the hand is dead immediately, before the dealer even plays. That ordering is the entire source of the house's advantage.

Stand

Keep what you have and end your turn. Standing on a modest 13 against a weak dealer card is often right, because the dealer is forced to keep drawing where you are not.

Double down

Double your bet and receive exactly one more card. It's the aggressive move for the spots where you're a clear favourite, classically a total of 11 when the dealer shows a small card. One card, double the money, no second chances.

Split

A pair can be split into two independent hands, each backed by your original bet. Always split aces and eights: two eights are a miserable 16 together but two promising hands apart. Never split tens — a made 20 is too good to break up. After a split you may usually still double down, which is exactly why small pairs against a weak dealer card are worth splitting.

Surrender

Fold the hand after the deal and recover half your bet. It feels like quitting; it's arithmetic. Hard 16 against a dealer 10 loses more than half a bet on average when played out, so saving half is the profitable exit. Only a handful of hands qualify.

And one side bet: insurance

When the dealer shows an ace you'll be offered insurance, a side bet costing half your stake that pays 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack. The dealer has blackjack less than one time in three, so the bet loses money long-term. Decline it. (Card counters get an exception, covered below.)

Basic Strategy Chart

For every combination of your hand and the dealer's upcard there is exactly one mathematically best move. The complete set fits on three small tables, computed from millions of simulated hands and unchanged since computers first confirmed Baldwin's 1956 work. Played perfectly, basic strategy cuts the house edge to roughly 0.5% on a 3:2 table — the best odds of any standard casino game.

Nobody memorises the chart in a day, and nobody needs to. Most of it compresses into patterns: stand on hard 17 or more. Hit hard 11 or less. Stand on 12–16 only against a dealer 2–6. Double 11. Split aces and eights, never tens or fives. Decline insurance. The interactive trainer in lesson 4 above quizzes you on the cells players actually get wrong — soft 18 against a 9 stings exactly once.

One honest caveat: strategy improves your decisions, not any single result. You can play a hand perfectly and lose it. The chart wins by making every decision cost less over hundreds of hands, which is also why the table above awards XP for correct choices rather than lucky outcomes.

Card Counting with the Hi-Lo System

Card counting is legal everywhere, requires no photographic memory, and is far less glamorous than the films suggest. It rests on one fact: a shoe still rich in tens and aces favours the player, through more blackjacks at 3:2 and more dealer busts. A shoe full of small cards favours the house. Counting just tracks which of those worlds you're in.

The running count

Add as cards appear. That sum is the running count, and after a fresh shuffle it starts at zero.

The true count

A running count of +6 means little with five decks left and a lot with one. Divide the running count by the decks remaining to get the true count, the number every decision hangs on. Running +6 with three decks left is true +2.

Betting with the count

The classic ramp: at true count +1 or below, bet one unit, the table minimum. Above that, bet (true count − 1) × 2 units, capped around 8. At true +3 and higher, insurance flips from a sucker bet to a profitable one, the single exception to "always decline".

Two practical notes. Casinos may not arrest counters, but they can and do ask them to leave; counting at a live table is a cat-and-mouse skill, not a licence to print money. And online RNG blackjack shuffles the virtual shoe every hand, which makes counting pointless there — live-dealer games with deep penetration are the only online context where it means anything. Blackjack Questions, Answered

How do you play blackjack?

You place a bet, receive two cards, and try to finish with a higher total than the dealer without going over 21. On your turn you choose to hit, stand, double down, split a pair, or surrender. The dealer then plays by fixed rules — hit to 16, stand on 17 — and bets are settled.

How do you play 21?

"21" is simply another name for blackjack, and the rules are identical. Number cards count face value, pictures count 10, and aces count 1 or 11. You beat the dealer by holding the higher total at or under 21, or by staying in while the dealer busts.

Is the goal to get as close to 21 as possible?

No, and this misconception costs beginners real money. The goal is to beat the dealer, which often means standing on a total as low as 12 or 13 when the dealer's upcard is weak. Chasing 21 for its own sake leads to busting hands that would have won by standing.

What do "hit" and "stand" mean?

"Hit" asks the dealer for another card to improve your total; you may hit repeatedly until you stand or bust. "Stand" ends your turn and locks in your current total. They are the two decisions you'll make in almost every hand, and the strategy chart tells you which one is right.

Does the dealer follow the same rules as the players?

No. The dealer has no choices at all: house rules force a hit on every total of 16 or less and a stand on every 17 or more. At the table on this page the dealer also stands on soft 17, which is the player-friendlier version of that rule.

What is a blackjack and what does it pay?

A blackjack, or natural, is an ace plus a ten-value card as your first two cards. It beats every other hand and traditionally pays 3:2, so a 20-chip bet returns 30 in winnings. Avoid tables paying 6:5 on blackjack — that single rule change costs more than every other variation combined.

When should I split or double down?

Is card counting illegal?

No — counting is thinking, and thinking is legal in every jurisdiction. Casinos are private businesses, though, and may refuse service to players they suspect of counting. Online RNG games shuffle every hand, which makes counting ineffective rather than forbidden.
